“Joker” Oscar nomination possibilities

Unless you’ve been in a hole over the past few months, you’re aware that the film Joker is coming out in October. Joaquin Phoenix stars, and is supported by a beefy cast of Robert De Niro, Zazie Beets, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, and more.

According to sources, the new film by Todd Phillips will be seen at the Venice Film Festival. For those of you who don’t know, this festival that is most associated with awards season. A lot of the time, Warner Bro’s uses this festival to put forth its contenders; most recent being A Star Is Born.

I’m sure many of you, like myself, have watched this trailer countless times. I think it’s one of the best trailers to come out in a while, and the most intriguing film of the year. Joaquin Phoenix taking on one of the biggest villains of all time, set in a gritty 80’s Gotham, with Robert De Niro making an appearance. What else could you want?! Once the news hit, that the film will be at the Venice Film Festival, the Academy Award questions began to come up. If Joker is nominated, these are some of the possibilities for categories.

Best Actor – Joaquin Phoenix

In my opinion, Phoenix is one of the best actors over the past decade. He’s been nominated by three Academy Awards, but unfortunately hasn’t left with a statue. Will this be the fourth times a charm award? Just from the trailer and set photos, you can tell he put his heart and soul into this project. I’m super excited to see what he makes of the character, and the tragic transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime.

Best Cinematography – Lawrence Sher

This guy shot, The Hangover Part III, War Dogs, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and more. The trailer shows some beautiful imagery, which if used throughout, could very well get this film a nomination. Of all the things I didn’t like about Godzilla, one of the best parts was how it was shot. I think Sher has a real talent, and can’t wait to see how he works his magic in Gotham.

Best Production Design – Mark Friedberg

Did you see all of those trash bags in the trailer?! If those were an accident, someone’s getting fired. To show this dirty, gritty side of Gotham, the production design has to be on point. The trailer is a time machine in itself, and I think this will have a real shot in this category. Also Mark won an Emmy for his work on Mildred Pierce.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling – Various

What’s a Joker movie without awesome makeup? I love the fact that Phoenix will be applying the makeup himself. It makes the story more raw, and menacing in my opinion.

Best Costume Design – Mark Bridges

The Oscar winner behind Phantom Thread, and Inherent Vice has designed a Joker outfit! I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love the look, and I already know what my Halloween costume will be.

Best Adapted Screenplay – Todd Phillips & Scott Silver

We all know Phillips from The Hangover Trilogy, and his Oscar nom for Borat. The other writer Silver, was nominated for writing The Fighter starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg. The combination is unusual, but I feel will somehow work fantastically.

Are you excited for the new Joker film? What are you thoughts? Do you think it will win any awards? Would love to hear your opinions!
