“Leatherface” is an avoid.

Today, I rented “Leatherface” from 2017 on Amazon. I was genuinely excited, and have been waiting for this movie for many months now. I’m a huge fan of the [Chainsaw] series, and the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” from 1974 is one of my favorite horror films.

It had an intriguing premise, “A teenage Leatherface escapes from a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnapping a young nurse and taking her on a road trip from hell, while being pursued by a lawman out for revenge.” – IMDb. This sounds like it would have lots of promise, and will do justice leading into the original film.

It did exactly the opposite for me. To be quite honest, I was bored almost the entire movie. The story was uninteresting, and didn’t really connect to the original at all. That’s disappointing in the fact that, that was the goal.

It’s a very 2017 movie. This means that they took full advantage of the ability to use gore and sex. I don’t have a problem with the elements, as sometimes they are important the story. But in this case, the scenes that included sex were completely pointless. Some of the special effects were cool, but were unnecessary.

The acting was just awful. The only good person in the film was Lili Taylor. She’s great in everything. Stephen Dorff way overacted. This movie tried to be the modern Devil’s Rejects, with the angry sheriff going all bat-shit crazy on everyone. To me, this was a poor decision. I understand why he’s angry, but he doesn’t have to kill everyone he comes in contact with.

I kept this nice and short because I don’t really want to talk about it anymore than I have to. It’s very much an avoid, and wouldn’t even recommend renting it.
